'Bo in Color

Computer color. Not sure it worked out so well. Rather blotchy. And a little garish. The colors definitely make the 2 businessman figures look stiffer than before.

'Bo in B&W

Inked. I got lazy at the end. Decided I would do the lettering on the computer. Next time I'll know better.

Colored/corrected version coming.

RIP Frazetta

He could do more with a pencil than most artists could with their entire studio.

Woof woof!

Roughs.

I am about 1/2 way through penciling a new strip. And it hit me that it may be interesting to share the process a bit. I thought maybe some peeps would be interested to see the bones, as it were. The finished piece should be up in the next couple of days. Been away from the drawing board too long, going to have to kick it up a notch if I plan to rock 88 MPH Huey Lewis "Back in Time" style.

Addendum : I have been confining myself to working on 8 1/2" x 11" 1 ply bristol(standard letter size). The scanner only accepts up to legal size. I have the big 'official' bristol of the comic world, but alas, no way to scan it short of taking it to the local copy shop. I'm not ready for that yet. A few months maybe.

New toon.

Was playing around with layout ideas for a gag and this just seemed to caption itself. I decided, as it wasn't my originally intended idea/layout, to leave it as a rough.

And because I love to play in Photoshop...

Oh and happy 420.

Enjoy your view?

Bwahaha!

No, I didn't draw it, but you just can't make up stuff this funny. A brief history. There is a pretty low rent apt complex that had some 'luxury' town homes built next to them(the ones on the left.) The town homes have their backs to the apts. and there are maybe 2 small windows that face them. On the other side of the town homes was a double lot house with an extensive garden. The town homes looked down into the yard of the house. I hate that. But eventually the house was demolished. Hate that even more. Now the hilarious part. Even bigger, more 'luxurious' town homes(the ones on the right) were built on the lot the house stood on. These new ones have their back to, guess what? That's right, the old luxury town homes. It's kind of awesome to see the once 'luxury' town homes now relegated to being the big brother of the shady apts. And good luck trying to sell. Guess they'll have to demolish them and build bigger ones now.

Robot Cartoon

Colored on the computer. I may do a wash over the line art later. Had the idea for a few years and banged it out this morning in about 3 hours. Getting faster. Now I just have to make my lettering more consistent. I want to be able to letter directly in pen.

A groaner.

This is from a few years ago. Done on the back of a menu at work. Drawn directly in ball point.

It's funny to put all this material in one place. Remembering the mental state I was in at a given time. In this piece for example. I was reading a TON of cartoon books. I had just acquired 'The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker', was picking up and digging into works by Gahan Wilson, Mort Gerberg, George Herriman, George Booth, Charles Addams and others. I had this idea that I needed to try and develop a one panel 'style'. Throughout my drawing life I have tried to stay away from an intentional style, mainly because I have never had any idea of how to analyze the fundamentals of a particular style in such a way as to consciously incorporate or imitate it. I know a guy who has always impressed me with his quick grasp and mastery of the fundamentals of the way something was presented. Whenever I have tried to make my work fit into a style of conscious presentation, I have found that it is usually quite unpleasing to me(and not very well executed at all.)

So here is one of my attempts to draw 'cartoon-y'. Meh.

Lately though, I have been trying to focus on developing a 'big-foot' style. I could be wrong, but it seems that this idea of 'style' has more to do with, stay with me here, stylizing your own style. If that makes sense. If not, sorry. I don't feel like going further into that idea right now. Feel like I have used my entire day's quota of the word 'style'.

I have had a few ideas all of a sudden and have become sidetracked. I will have 'new' new work up soon.
